Darren Elliott (MA ELT, DELTA)

APPENDIX F

Appendix F – Interactive Sample, Informal

N: I always always almost everyday I need to go their house and to wake him, to wake her up.

G: You actually went to her house?

N: But she, she I wake her up, she, ok? But how can I say, she's very friendly and she, how can I say, our relationship rapport is really good so she doesn't care even though, if I go to, went her house and wake her up.

G: I'm listening.

N: Are you sure?

G: Yes!

N: But her house never lock the house, her house so it's easier to get on her house and wake her up. And one day..

G: Actually physically wake her up?

N: Hmm, yeah. Because she never wake up without anybody's help.

G: Woah!

N: But I always try to not to touch her body, actually.

E: You had better not do that.

G: That's totally unacceptable where I…

E: And she may need a doctor, not a teacher (laughs).

N: I know, I know, yeah I know..but one day, one day when I was there and she was also sleeping on the futon , do you know the futon? Kind of.. (yeah) and I need to wake her up but before I wake her up ahhh how can I say futon? Pull it up before pulling up the futon I said, I called her name Sayuri, her name is Sayuri, Sayuri, wake up, Sayuri wake up, but she didn't respond at all. So, so I pulled futon up, pulled the futon up (you just pulled..?) yeah, Sayuri wake up, I said wake up but (laughs) she was not there, her mother was there!

G: Good Grief!

L: Oh my GOSH!

G: What happened, come on?

E: (laughs)

N: After that she got really angry.

G: yeah yeah yeah, and?

N: after that she never accept er allow me to get inside, and also she er her child never attend my class.

G: I think that's understandable, I mean from my cultural point of view ..

N: I know, don't do that but she how can I say? Her personality too strong so she has no friends at the school. So I need to, I asked the students at the class why don't you go to the Sayuri's house and to wake her up but nobody wants to, so I had to go to her house.

G: But for me that's really strange because that's parental responsibility.

N: Yeah I know, I don't want to of course.

G: So where was she?

N: She is working in er the bar..

C: But but my, what perception of education is very different. I mean, if my student want to drop the school it's ok, their choice. Working for the bar, what? Their choice, even though they are young.

N: But I'm working at the junior high school!

C: It's ok…their choice blah blah blah. If someone drop the school, ok, drop it right now.

N: You can say that, but I can never say that.

C: I can't say that directly, but if somebody say…think three times, then ok, go!

N: If I said that I was beaten, I will be beaten, in my mind.

C: In your mind!

N: I don't want to say that.

C: My case, I don't say it directly but I think three times, sincerely but even though the drop school and go to bar or whatever, I don't think they are loser.

N: But how can I say? In Japan some teachers just do the teaching but this is my opinion but in my opinion how can I say without continuous effort to help the students school does not function very well, adequately, this is my opinion so….some teachers are lazy but without any others help students cannot be independent.

C: Human cannot change human, they cannot change somebody's mind, never.

N: But can I say something, in my opinion human cannot change human but we can change..correct children's misbehaviour. (to a certain degree)

C: My case, even though my parents educate me something, I can pretend to follow their instructions ok ok…

G: So who has authority in the life of your students?

N: Nobody, so that's a problem, nobody such a student are never afraid of anybody, nobody!
(everybody laughs)

N: So such a child, can I say, so such a child is protected by the how can I say, yakuza ahh junior. So when they go back to the house how do you translate it obochama! Welcome back!

C: What can you do?

N: Shitabari …Servant yakuza, right? Shitayakuza is waiting for them, but I need to visit their house and I meet a lot at the gates (laughs).
